Mackenzie Thorpe is a British artist, born in Middlesbrough in 1956. He is a painter and sculptor, whose work is incredibly popular. His work is known for its warmth, gentle humour and positivity. He calls it ‘art from the heart’. Some of his art is extremely accessible, such as his Square Sheep and Duffle Coat Boys paintings. However, Mackenzie is also known for more challenging work, based on the struggle of man, isolation and loneliness. Much of his work is inspired by his childhood in Middlesbrough. His Sheep are essentially depictions of his family.
Mackenzie Thorpe has painted a commission for The Queen, which he calls ‘the highlight of his career.’ In fact, two of his works hang in Her Majesty’s private collection. Another of his paintings is displayed in the boardroom of Barcelona FC. In 2016, he published his latest portfolio, called ‘Reflection’. It was an emotional year for Mackenzie, as he saw the birth of his first grandchildren, but was also diagnosed with cancer. Thankfully, he is now in remission.
In 2015, Mackenzie Thorpe was asked to create something to commemorate the centenary of the Great War. His picture of a large, single poppy on a battlefield, crying a single tear became an iconic image of this time of remembrance. Mackenzie said. ‘It was an honour and a privilege to be asked to help commemorate this event.’
